What is resin bound aggregate?

Resin bound aggregate is a blend of dried natural stone and a clear resin, mixed on site and hand-trowelled to a smooth, even surface. Because the stone is fully coated and bound together, there's no loose gravel to kick around. It's different from resin bonded, where loose stone is scattered onto a layer of resin and the surface stays rougher and can shed stones over time.

Benefits

  • Natural look — a wide range of stone blends to suit modern and classic homes.
  • Permeable — laid over a suitable base, water can drain through rather than pooling or running off.
  • UV-stable resin — we use UV-stable (aliphatic) resin, chosen to resist yellowing in Perth's strong sun.
  • Comfortable and tidy — smooth underfoot, no loose stones, and good around pools and entertaining areas.
  • Can go over sound concrete — in many cases it can be laid over an existing, structurally sound slab, avoiding demolition.

Typical uses

Driveways, front paths, garden paths, pool surrounds, patios, alfresco areas and entries. It's a popular upgrade for tired concrete or exposed aggregate driveways where the slab is still sound. For areas with heavy turning traffic or very poor existing bases, we'll tell you honestly whether a different solution, such as a new concrete driveway, makes more sense.

Our resin bound process

  1. Inspect and quote. We assess the existing base, levels, drainage and edges, and help you choose a stone blend.
  2. Prepare the base. Existing concrete is cleaned and repaired, and cracks are treated; new areas need a suitable, stable base built first.
  3. Edging and set-out. Edges, thresholds and joints are set so the finished surface sits at the right height and falls.
  4. Mix and lay. Dried aggregate and resin are mixed in measured batches, spread and hand-trowelled to an even depth.
  5. Cure and handover. The surface is left to cure, with foot and vehicle traffic times confirmed for the weather on the day.

Caring for a resin bound surface

Regular sweeping and an occasional low-pressure wash keep it looking good. Clean up oil and fuel spills promptly. Because it's permeable, keeping it clear of soil and leaf build-up helps it continue draining well.

Frequently asked questions

Is resin bound aggregate suitable for Perth weather?

Yes, provided a UV-stable resin is used and the surface is laid over a suitable base. We use UV-stable resin for outdoor work to help resist yellowing in strong sun.

Can resin bound go over my existing concrete driveway?

Often, yes, if the concrete is structurally sound. Cracks are treated first. If the slab is badly cracked, moving or breaking up, it may need repairs or replacement before resin is laid.

Is a resin bound driveway permeable?

The resin bound layer itself is porous. Whether the whole driveway drains through depends on the base underneath; over solid concrete, water drains through the resin and then runs off along the falls of the slab.

What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?

Resin bound mixes the stone and resin together and trowels them smooth, giving a porous surface with no loose stones. Resin bonded scatters stone onto a resin layer, giving a rougher, non-porous finish that can shed stones.

How long until I can drive on it?

It depends on the resin and the temperature. We confirm foot and vehicle traffic times on the day and at handover.
